PLACES OF PORTUGAL

In late summer of 2021, I established a temporary residency in Portugal, just west of the capital, on the sea. Portugal is a colorful country, with an interesting history, which generated a lot of creative energy in me. The sites, symbols and especially the colors are embedded into my memory and have inevitably made their way into my works.

About this series

I had visitors every year when I lived in Portugal, mostly in spring and early summer, when the jacarandas and bougainvilleas were in full bloom. I would take them on walking tours around Lisbon, with its iconic red bridge over the Tagus, sail boats on the river and sea, looming Christ statue and roman arches, all featuring prominently. It was an opportunity for me as well to see quite a bit of the area and I even ventured to other areas of the country by myself. This series emerged from these jaunts!

Morning Meanderings

About this series

I went for long morning walks when I lived in Portugal, sometimes down to the beach but mostly just around the village. There was a walking path right through the center that was filled with a profusion of bougainvillea, in red, pinks and oranges. They were trapped between the sides of stucco apartment buildings, often spilling over the side of concrete walls.

Fisherman’s Trail series

About this series

In May 2022, a friend from the Netherlands visited, she was my first visitor since I arrived in Portugal. We took a trip down to the Algarve, to walk the Fisherman’s Trail, from Lagos to Sagres over the course of several days. We assumed that by going in early May, we would avoid the heat of summer. This was not the case and we battled 28-30 degree heat most days; climbing up and down steep, sandy cliffs was not always fun, but the views were stupendous!
