ARTIST STATEMENT
I’m a huge proponent of movement and throughout my life, have challenged myself personally and professional by embracing change, whether in a new role or a new country. I bring this intrepid spirit to my art process, employing a trial and error approach. It is rare for me to begin a painting with a plan or preconceived notion of what it should look like. My sole objective is to develop a rapport with my materials, techniques and the substrate. The act of creating provides me the ability to give physical form to my feelings and through that, I’m better equipped to process them. Painting isn’t only a form of self-expression but a vessel for greater understanding, of myself and life. By trusting the process and allowing the painting to reveal itself in due course, I’ve been able to release self-limiting beliefs, to live in a more joyful way.
My process pushes the boundaries of traditional artistic styles by combining the gestural, spontaneous qualities of abstraction with recognizable forms and details. The results are paintings that invites the viewer to explore and viewing one up close feels akin to going on a journey. There are paths to travel, tiny drawings and shapes to gaze upon, evocative words to ponder, rich colors and textures to enjoy.
The place I’m creating on the substrate is often not an actual place, but rather a place in my mind, based on memories and emotions that come to the surface during the creative process. Making a painting is like going on a grand adventure, filled with curiosity, along with a tinge of trepidation and a hefty dose of excitement. It is an endlessly fascinating journey to me! My aim is to challenge the viewer to discover their own sense of adventure, encouraging them to explore more of the wider world and in the due course, discover more about themselves.

BIO
Susan Singh is an emerging modern painter who’s style lean towards abstraction expressionism. She is inspired by her love of exploring the planet and is hugely influenced by color. Susan experiments with various materials, working within an abstract composition, then using mixed media techniques like layering, collage and loose drawing to integrate realistic elements, allowing her to create a cohesive piece. The result is a unique blend that creates both a sense of familiarity and intrigue for the viewer.
Susan was born in Guyana but emigrated to the U.S in her mid-teens. While pursuing a finance degree in the late 80s, Susan used her general electives to learn about art history and completed two college-level Drawing & Composition courses. She began painting in oils as a hobby in her mid-20s, however demands of the financial world soon took over, so she didn’t pick up a paint brush for 20 years. Upon leaving financial services, she participated in several virtual workshops between 2021 and 2024, from art teachers Nicholas Wilton, Louise Fletcher and Judy Woods, to further develop her skills. Susan is currently based in Portland(OR), but has lived in several countries, most recently in the Lisbon area of Portugal, where she dedicated thousands of hours to studio work, experimentation in mixed media and focused on deepening her practice in abstraction.
